A stock that just lost a quarter of its value in a month is usually not a bargain. On average it keeps falling. But add one condition, that the company kept posting more jobs through the crash, and the same setup has resolved higher 7 times out of 10, with an average gain of 18.8% over the next four months. We counted every occurrence since 2023 across the companies we monitor and what we found was a great strategy.

Buying Crashes Is a Losing Strategy. This Filter Flips It.

Since 2023, stocks in our coverage have lost 25% or more in a single month on 5,913 occasions. Buying every one of those dips would have lost money: the average crashed stock fell another 3.7% over the following 120 days, underperformed the market by 8 points, and finished higher only 37% of the time. Most crashes are crashes for a reason.

Now add the filter. We looked for crashes where the company's job postings grew at least 20% over the same month the stock was falling, limited to companies worth more than $10 billion. That happened 42 times. Those stocks averaged +18.8% over the next 120 days, with a median of +8.7%, and 71% of them were higher. Large-cap crashes without the hiring signal returned +7.9% with a 57% win rate over the same windows. One alternative data filter roughly doubled the average outcome and added 14 points of win rate.

The logic is simple. Companies plan hiring around what they see coming, and they see their own pipeline months before the market does. A company that keeps adding open roles while its stock is being dumped is telling you its internal outlook and its share price disagree. History says the internal outlook usually wins.

Twelve of the 41 resolved events lost money, so this is not a signal that removes risk. What it does is shift the odds. The median event gained 8.7%, the winners ran much further than the losers fell, and the best outcomes, Astera Labs at +210%, Coinbase at +85%, IonQ at +71%, are what it looks like when the market dumps a company that never stopped executing.

42 signals since 2023. 71% resolved higher.

How We Counted

We track daily job postings and prices for roughly 3,000 public companies. For this study we averaged both into weekly data from January 2023 onward and flagged every week where a stock had fallen at least 25% over the trailing 30 days while its job postings had grown at least 20%. We required at least 20 open postings at the start, so a company going from 3 jobs to 4 could not sneak in, dropped repeat triggers within 60 days of a prior one, and measured what the stock did over the following 60 and 120 days. Events too recent to have a resolved 120-day window were excluded, so nothing from the current selloff is in the results.

The comparison group, every stock that crashed 25% regardless of hiring, is what makes the numbers meaningful. Without it, "buy crashes" could be the whole story. With it, we can see exactly what the hiring signal adds.

Where the Signal Dies

It's not a perfect strategy. The signal only works in large caps: companies between $2 billion and $10 billion with the same setup underperformed the market, and small caps were a coin flip propped up by a few moonshots. It also fails when the stock price is not about the business: the worst event in the table is Strategy, down another 31% after triggering, because MSTR trades on its Bitcoin treasury and its hiring says nothing about that.

And 42 events is a small sample, with 15 packed into the February 2026 selloff. Excluding that entire cluster, the win rate still holds at 73% with a median gain of 8.5%, so the result does not lean on one episode. Still, this is a measured pattern, not a law.

The Signal Is Firing Right Now

It is firing on AST SpaceMobile. ASTS appears in the table three times, more than any other stock. Its November 2025 trigger gained 64% in 60 days. Its May 2026 trigger is the one open event, and this week the setup got more extreme: the stock fell hard in the space selloff while its job postings sit above 300, double April's level. We break down the full setup, including Rocket Lab and Intuitive Machines, in our companion analysis of the space stock crash.

This screen now runs continuously on every company we monitor. When the next $10 billion company crashes while its hiring accelerates, we will flag it the same week. That is the whole point of alternative data: knowing before the recovery, not after.
