IREN spent four years as one of the world's largest Bitcoin miners. It is now repositioning as an AI cloud and data center company, and it is moving fast: a doubled workforce, job postings up nearly sevenfold, a $9.7 billion Microsoft contract, and a deal with Nvidia. The alternative data shows the scale of the shift.

The pivot is the whole story, and management has stated it plainly. In a March 31 business update, CEO Daniel Roberts said that as the company completes its 50 EH/s mining expansion, its focus is shifting to scalable infrastructure for AI and high-performance computing through its AI cloud and AI data center businesses. IREN is pausing further Bitcoin mining expansion and redirecting mining cashflows, projected at an annualized $528 million this year, into the AI build-out.
The mechanics are straightforward. IREN already owns the scarcest resource in the AI economy: large blocks of permitted, low-cost, mostly renewable power. It is retrofitting its existing Bitcoin sites in British Columbia and West Texas into AI data centers, and it has secured additional sites in Texas and Oklahoma. The Sweetwater hub in West Texas is being prepared as a 2 GW campus. Power that used to hash Bitcoin is being repointed at GPU clusters.
The hiring data shows how aggressively the company is moving. Its job postings averaged 16.5 per month a year ago. Today, that figure sits at roughly 114, a 597% jump year-over-year. LinkedIn headcount tells the same story from the other side: 193 employees in July 2025, 401 a year later. The company more than doubled its workforce in twelve months.
For a pure Bitcoin miner, that pace of hiring would make no sense. Mining is a capital game, not a labor game. You buy machines, you secure cheap power, and you run the rigs with a lean team. The headcount surge is what an aggressive AI infrastructure build-out looks like in the data: sales, engineering, and operations staff to stand up data centers and service enterprise cloud contracts.

The build-out is expensive, and three contracts show that customers are funding it. IREN has stacked up the deals that turn the pivot from ambition into revenue.
In October 2025, Microsoft signed a five-year AI cloud services contract with IREN reported at $9.7 billion. In May, Nvidia announced a two-part deal: a potential equity investment giving it the right to buy up to 30 million shares at $70 each, plus a multi-billion-dollar managed cloud services contract for Nvidia's own internal AI workloads. When the company that makes the chips pays you to run the chips, and invests in your equity to lock in the capacity, the market is telling you that permitted power is worth more than the silicon sitting on top of it.
| Partner | Deal | Announced |
| Microsoft | $9.7B five-year AI cloud services contract | Oct 2025 |
| Nvidia | Equity option (30M shares at $70) plus managed cloud contract | May 2026 |
| Golden State Warriors | $50M+/year jersey patch, richest in North American sports | Jun 2026 |
The Warriors deal is the loudest signal that IREN now sees itself as a consumer-facing brand, not a back-office miner. The company just announced that it signed a multi-year jersey patch sponsorship reported at more than $50 million per year, the richest in the history of North American team sports, replacing Rakuten on Golden State's jerseys starting in the 2026-27 season. Bitcoin miners do not buy the most expensive logo placement in American sports. AI cloud providers chasing enterprise mindshare do.
The hiring surge does not sit alone. IREN's web traffic went from effectively nothing through most of 2025 to over 350,000 monthly visits by May 2026, consistent with a company that suddenly has an enterprise sales motion and a recruiting funnel to feed. On June 29, IREN was added to the Russell 1000 Index, a milestone that pulls in index-fund flows and broadens the institutional ownership base.
Our AI Score for IREN sits at 62, inside buy-signal territory. The strength is concentrated where you would expect for a company in this phase: audience and customer signals are strong, hiring momentum is intact, and the stock is up 211% year-over-year even after pulling back from its May peak.
AltIndex Price & AI Score History
The fundamental signal is the soft spot. IREN's most recent quarter, ending December 2025, showed revenue of $121 million but a net loss of $102 million and negative EBITDA, a sharp swing from the prior quarter's profit. The pivot is expensive, and the income statement reflects a company spending heavily ahead of revenue.
The build-out is not self-funding. Analysts have flagged a multi-billion-dollar funding gap to complete the AI infrastructure transition, and IREN has already tapped convertible notes and an equity-sale program to raise capital. That means dilution risk and execution risk. The thesis depends on energizing new capacity on schedule and converting secured power into signed, recurring AI contracts faster than the cash burns. Revenue is also concentrated around a small number of large partners, so a single delayed or downsized contract moves the whole story.
IREN is no longer a Bitcoin stock that occasionally talks about AI. The hiring data, the headcount, the web traffic, the contracts, and a $50 million jersey patch all point in one direction: a power-and-compute company repositioning itself as core AI infrastructure. The alternative data caught the shift early, while the ticker still carried a crypto-mining label.
The open question is execution. The market has already priced in a successful transition. From here, the numbers that matter are how fast new GPU capacity comes online, how much of it lands under firm recurring contracts, and whether the AI cloud revenue scales before the funding gap forces more dilution. Watch the hiring trend and the quarterly AI cloud revenue mix. Those will tell you whether the pivot is working long before the price does.
