We took the 10 most-mentioned stocks on Reddit every month for a year and measured each monthly basket against SPY. The baskets returned 28.5% on average against 13.0% for the index, a 15.6 point edge, with nine of the twelve lists ahead. Here is the full scoreboard, and where the edge actually came from.
Every week someone declares that Reddit chatter is either the best free signal in retail investing or pure noise. Both sides argue from anecdotes, so we ran the numbers instead. We pulled our Reddit mentions data for the twelve complete months from June 2025 through May 2026, took the 10 most-mentioned stocks each month, and treated each list as an equal-weight paper basket. Then we measured every basket against SPY over the exact same window. We ran this one on paper, but you don't have to: our Autopilot runs Reddit-tracking portfolios like this automatically.
The rules were fixed upfront. Stocks only, no ETFs or crypto. No GME, which topped the ranking all twelve months as a permanent meme fixture and lost money doing it. Nothing under a $10 billion market cap at list time, and whenever a rule removes a name, the next most-mentioned qualifying stock takes its slot. Our mentions data updates in real time rather than at month-end, so a follower of the data sees which names are trending as the month unfolds. Each position is therefore measured from the stock's average price during its list month through July 2026, with SPY on the identical convention. A stricter wait-for-month-end version is further down, and it wins too.
The average monthly basket returned 28.5% against 13.0% for SPY. The summer 2025 lists were monsters, with the August basket beating the index by 64 percentage points, while the November, December and February lists fell behind it.

The full scoreboard is below, with every ticker colored by its own return since its list month. Dark green gained 30% or more, dark red lost 20% or more, and the pale chips in between roughly tracked the market.

Basket = equal-weight average of the 10 stocks. The baskets averaged +28.5% against +13.0% for SPY over identical windows.
As we can see from the baskets, most of what Reddit talks about most simply tracks the market. What's interesting is that the giant outliers came from names that crashed into the rankings. Intel entered in August 2025 while the turnaround was still a punchline and returned +420%. AMD did +320% from the June list, Micron +146% from March, Nebius +116% from November. The names whose Reddit attention was changing fastest earned nearly all of the excess return.
But the strategy is not without risk - the same door lets in the losers. Oracle entered in September at peak AI-infrastructure hype and has lost 49% since, and MicroStrategy lost 53% from November. New entrants carry fat tails in both directions, which is exactly why they deserve your research time before your money.
The $10 billion floor earned its place too. Without it, the lists pick up Beyond Meat (down 64% from its October list), Gap (down 22%) and Nuburu, a $47 million micro cap that lost 93%, and the overall edge shrinks from 15.6 points to 11.9. Across all twelve months, not one stock under $10 billion that cracked Reddit's most-mentioned list went on to beat the market. When a micro cap is suddenly among the most discussed tickers on Reddit, it's critical to research the stock, and not just FOMO into the hype.
SanDisk shows the limit of a monthly top-10 rule. It only reached the top 10 in May 2026, after the stock had already run roughly 40x. The May position has gained a respectable 22% since, but the 40x came first, invisible to any month-end ranking. The tradable moment comes when an ignored ticker first starts getting loud. That is the window our real-time Reddit alerts are built to catch, and it is where Intel, Micron and SanDisk itself first showed up in the mentions data, months before they topped any list.

Set Up Reddit Alerts →Reddit's most-mentioned stocks beat the market over the past year: a 15.6 point edge with a fully mechanical rule set. Even the strictest version of the experiment, waiting for each month to close and entering at the following month's average price, still wins by 10.3 points, 21.2% against 10.9% for SPY, with eight of twelve months ahead. So is Reddit chatter the best free signal in retail investing or pure noise? One year is a short example, but for the last year, Reddit data has proven to be an edge.
