Tesla's Cybercab is finally carrying passengers in Austin. But after months of anticipation, investors appear to have wanted more from its official launch.
Tesla shares rallied 5.4% yesterday as excitement built ahead of the event. Then the mood changed. Tesla chose not to livestream the launch, relatively few new details emerged about how quickly Cybercab would scale, and federal regulators opened an investigation into the vehicle's certification shortly after the rollout began.
Today, Tesla shares is down roughly 6%, wiping out yesterday's rally. Our social data shows a similar shift: Reddit discussion nearly doubled on the day of the event, while sentiment dropped sharply.
Tesla entered Thursday with plenty of momentum. Shares rose from $357.01 on Wednesday to $376.37 on Thursday as investors waited for the Cybercab event.
The launch itself was a meaningful milestone. Tesla began offering limited rides in Austin using its purpose-built two-seat robotaxi, which has no steering wheel or pedals. But the rollout was smaller and quieter than some investors had hoped. Tesla did not livestream the event, relatively few new deployment details emerged, and only 45 Cybercabs were registered in Texas around the launch.
MarketWatch described the launch as landing "with a thud", noting that investors received little new information about how broadly or quickly Cybercab would be deployed.
The changing mood is especially clear in our Reddit data. Mentions of Tesla jumped leading up to the event, but sentiment moved the other way, falling from bullish to neutral.
The underlying comments help explain the shift.
Even before the event, traders were wondering whether the rally would turn into another Tesla sell-the-news trade. With the stock already sharply higher, one commenter asked: "How far will it drop after the event?"
As the event unfolded, the criticism became more specific. One Reddit user wrote, "Crazy there's no live stream of this event for TSLA..." Minutes later another predicted: "No news after all that run up. 350 open."
By the evening, one commenter complained that Cybercab had been "announced twice with nothing new to say about it."
There were bulls too. One user summed up the other side simply: "Tesla is the future. Cybercab is crazy."
Sentiment had been volatile in the weeks leading up to the launch, so September 3 was not an unprecedented low. What stands out is the combination: discussion almost doubled from the previous day while sentiment dropped more than 15 percentage points.
By Friday, Tesla had fallen to $351.94, a 6.5% decline from Thursday's close and enough to erase the entire pre-event rally.
Discussion remained elevated elsewhere too. StockTwits mentions increased from 4,305 on Thursday to 5,740 on Friday, while sentiment slipped from 71% to 67%.
That doesn't mean Reddit or StockTwits caused — or predicted — the selloff. Investors on social media and in the market were reacting to many of the same developments.
One of those developments arrived Friday morning, when federal regulators began scrutinizing Tesla's Cybercab certification. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the process and technical data Tesla used to self-certify the Cybercab under federal vehicle-safety standards.
The scrutiny is especially relevant because Cybercab is designed without conventional controls such as a steering wheel or pedals. It added another source of uncertainty just as Tesla was beginning real-world operations.
Cybercab reaching public roads is a real milestone for Tesla. But the reaction to its launch shows how high expectations have become.
The stock rallied into the event, Reddit activity surged, and sentiment deteriorated as investors digested what Tesla actually showed. The following day, the shares gave back the entire rally.
The question is no longer whether Tesla can put a Cybercab on the road. It is whether the company can turn a small Austin rollout into a large, economically viable and regulator-approved transportation network.
For investors, that makes fleet growth, expansion into new markets, regulatory developments and the direction of social sentiment the key signals to watch next.
