Voice assistants have become the global trend in recent years thanks to their increasing accuracy, convenience, and growing integration with different devices and services. With artificial intelligence and voice recognition technology evolving, voice assistants will continue to expand globally, gaining more and more users in the coming years. Most of them will come from the United States, which convincingly tops in the use of these systems.
According to data presented by AltIndex.com, nearly half of Americans will use voice assistants by 2025.
The perfect combination of a tech-savvy consumer base that embraces new technologies and an early introduction and mass marketing of voice assistants like Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple's Siri has turned the United States into a country with the highest number of voice assistant users. Although other countries like China have also seen significant growth in voice assistant use, led by companies like Xiaomi, Alibaba, and Baidu, the United States remains the largest market in terms of overall users.
Although Americans use voice assistants primarily on their smartphones, smart home automation, where voice assistants control thermostats, lights, and other devices, has been a major driver of adoption. US businesses are also increasingly adopting voice assistants for operational efficiency and customer service, as more and more users prefer to speak their queries rather than type.
According to Statista and eMarketer data, 149.8 million people in the United States, or roughly 44% of its internet population, used a voice assistant this year, 3.8 million more than in 2023. Statistics show that 2025 and 2026 will see similar increases, helping the total number of users to slowly but steadily rise to 157.1 million in the next two years. The eMarketer data also shows that more than 88% of US internet users use voice assistants, like Google Assistant and Siri, on smartphones. The remaining 12% use them on devices like smart speakers.
The eMarketer data, which shows a steady increase in the number of voice assistant users in the United States, aligns with Statista projections of speech recognition industry growth, of which voice assistants are an essential part.
According to Statista, the global speech recognition market will grow by 27% and hit a $7.1 billion value by the end of 2024. The impressive double-digit growth will continue in the following years, with the market size jumping to almost $10 billion in the next two years. One-fifth of that value, or $2.6 billion, will come from the United States, the world's largest speech recognition market. China, Japan, and Germany follow with $1.8 billion, $441 million, and $425 million, respectively.
